Last month, some of our team traded contaminated land investigations for ecological work for a day, as we joined Greater Sydney Landcare for a memorable volunteering day at the beautiful Nurragingy Reserve in Doonside.
Why We Chose Landcare
The decision to partner with Greater Sydney Landcare was driven by our shared commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and creating meaningful impact. Landcare’s mission to protect native ecosystems and empower local communities resonated with us - and we were eager to contribute in a hands-on way.
Getting Down to Business
The day began with a warm welcome and orientation from the Landcare team, who briefed us on the history of the area and how invasive species were introduced and continue to threaten local flora and fauna. Nurragingy Reserve is named in honour of one of two Indigenous Australians from the Dharug tribe who were granted land by Governor Lachlan Macquarie during the colonial era. The other recipient, Colebee, is commemorated within the reserve through the naming of the Colebee Centre, a convention facility located on-site. This recognition highlights the deep cultural and historical significance of the area.

After a safety rundown and tool demo, we got to work - Our goal was helping out the critically endangered ecological plant community at the reserve. The work we undertook involved clearing weeds & invasive plant species such as balloon vine & privet to make way for more native plant growth to ensure the long-term health & ongoing resilience of this important bushland.
It was hard but rewarding work, and fantastic to step back at the end and see how much space we had cleared for native vegetation to thrive, and the amount of light now coming into the area.
BBQ Time!
We certainly worked up an appetite and we weren’t disappointed with the amazing feast for lunch prepared by Matt from Landcare, and assisted by our very own BBQ extraordinaire, Louis.
More Than Just Weeding
It was a great day out fostering fun, teambuilding & our commitment to social & environmental responsibility. A huge thanks to the Greater Sydney Landcare team for hosting us. Make sure you get in touch with them if you’re interested in this and other Landcare corporate volunteering opportunities.
