Making Meals That Matter: Our Day at Our Big Kitchen

Earlier this year, the TRACE Environmental team swapped hi-vis and hand-augers for aprons and ladles and spent half a day volunteering at Our Big Kitchen (OBK), a Sydney community kitchen that prepares meals for charities right across the city.
See some snippets of our experience at Our Big Kitchen below:
With the cost of living continuing to climb, it's sadly no surprise that more people are finding it hard to put food on the table each day. But one statistic from the OBK team stopped us in our tracks: today, one in three people in our community experience food insecurity. Not long ago, that figure was one in six.
The experience gave our team the chance to step away from our usual work and contribute to something different, with a real, tangible community impact. Heads down, pots bubbling and vegetables flying, we rolled up our sleeves and got cooking, and by the end of the session we'd helped prepare 150 nourishing meals, ready to be distributed to charities across Sydney.
It wasn't all hard work, either. We also got to play MasterChef for the morning, with each team handed a single "hero" ingredient and challenged to build a recipe around it from scratch. A bit of healthy team competition made it all the more fun, and you can catch some of those moments in the video above.
A big thank you to Our Big Kitchen for the incredible work you do every day, and for welcoming our team in to play a small part in it. We left with full hearts, a few new recipes, and a renewed appreciation for the difference being made in our community, one meal at a time.
